Stanthorpe

Moranbah
Coal mining in the Bowen Basin. Mine site roles — truck operators, maintenance, site services. FIFO or drive-in-drive-out. High pay, accommodation on-site.

Coffee, avocados, tropical fruit. Cairns region. Active April–November. Cooler temperatures than coastal QLD.
Lockyer Valley
Vegetables and potatoes. Close to Brisbane — about 1.5 hours west. Good transport links. Active year-round.
Types of Work Available in QLD
- Fruit & vegetable picking: Most accessible entry point. No experience required. Pay is often piece-rate — faster pickers earn more.
- Packing shed work: Sorting, grading, packing produce. Covered work, more consistent hours than outdoor picking.
- Mining site support: Mine sites in central QLD (Moranbah, Dysart, Clermont) often hire site service roles — cooks, cleaners, storekeepers — that don't require mining experience.
- Hospitality in regional towns: Pubs, motels, roadhouses in regional QLD hire backpackers. Less common but stable and year-round.
- Driving roles: Forklift, tractor, ute — if you have a licence and experience, these pay significantly more than picking roles.
Does Queensland Work Count for 88 Days?
Yes — most regional and rural Queensland postcodes are designated 88-day qualifying regions. Key postcodes that qualify include Bundaberg (4670), Bowen (4805), Stanthorpe (4380), and Moranbah (4744).
Brisbane and the Gold Coast do NOT qualify. If you're working in SEQ (south-east Queensland), the work generally won't count toward your 88 days unless it's in a designated regional postcode — like the Lockyer Valley or Darling Downs area.

Tips for Finding Work in QLD as a Backpacker
- Arrive before peak season: Don't show up in Bundaberg at the height of strawberry season expecting to find immediate work. Competition is fierce. Arrive 2–4 weeks early and register with employers before the rush.
- Have a car: Most farm regions have poor public transport. A car (or a connection to someone with one) dramatically expands your options.
- Get a tax file number before you arrive: You can apply online before arriving in Australia. Without one, employers are required to withhold 47% tax.
- Use verified platforms: Gumtree and Facebook groups are full of dodgy "employers" offering cash-in-hand work that won't count for 88 days. Use platforms that verify employers with ABN checks.
- Check the accommodation situation upfront: Some employers include accommodation (especially in remote locations). Know before you arrive whether you need to arrange your own housing.
